Does Insurance Cover Oil Leaks on My Motorcyle?

March 27, 2024 by Anchora Insurance

Let’s first discover what can cause a motorcycle oil leak. They’re not uncommon.

  1. Faulty Gaskets: The most frequent cause of oil leaks in motorcycles is faulty gaskets. Look for these gaskets in critical areas of the engine, including:
    • Oil Pan Gasket: Located underneath the engine.Valve Cover Gasket: Positioned on the top of the engine.Crankcase Gasket: Situated on the side of the engine.Cylinder Head Gasket: Found in the mid-level of the engine fins.
These gaskets experience high internal pressure, and if they become ineffective because of wear, shrinkage, or cracking, oil can seep out through weak spots. Regular use of your motorcycle helps keep these gaskets in better shape, as they expand and contract during operation. However, leaving your bike dormant for extended periods can negatively impact gasket longevity1.
  2. Faulty Plugs: Another common culprit is faulty plugs:
    • Oil Drain Plug: If this plug isn’t properly sealed, oil can escape.
    • Crankcase Side Plugs: These can also develop leaks.
    • Valve Cover Plugs: Similar to the others, these can fail and cause oil seepage1.
  3. Worn Seals and Damaged Parts: Over time, seals and components can wear out or sustain damage, leading to leaks. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to prevent such issues.
  4. Improper Maintenance: Neglecting oil changes, using incorrect oil, or overfilling can contribute to leaks. Proper care and timely servicing can help prevent these issues.

It’s important to check your warranty and extended warranty if you discover an oil leak.

Does my insurance cover any of these oil leaks?

While car insurance generally does not cover the cost of repairing oil leaks—considered maintenance issues—there’s an exception. If an oil leak results in an accident or damages another vehicle, your car insurance policy may provide coverage. To understand the specifics, review your policy or consult with your insurance provider.
